Basic Driving Instructor Course
PURPOSE
To obtain a DRIVING INSTRUCTOR’S LICENSE in Ontario, you must successfully complete
an approved Ministry of Transportation Driving Instructor Course. This course meets and
exceeds the Ministry of Transportation’s educational and practical requirements to qualify
to teach driving in Ontario.
GOAL
To prepare applicants to become safe and competent Driving Instructors
with the ability to train novice drivers in “G” class.

This course contains two components

- Collision Scene Management
- Insurance needs
- Evaluation and correcting techniques

OUTCOMES
Graduates of this program will:
- Be better equipped to understand individual learner’s needs
- Know how to coach different learning styles
- Be able to manage the risk for teaching driving to novice drivers
- Have the tools to teach, control, prevent and intervene in maintaining the safety of the student learners
PREREQUISITES
All candidates must have:
- Four or more years of valid driving experience (not classed as novice in Ontario)
- Clear driving record and ability to meet MTO requirements
- Registered at Driver Examination Test Centre
- Obtain Driving Instructor Kit and comply with all requirements

Driving Instructor Career Path
The following CPD Courses are offered through Humber and Centennial Colleges. They are recognized by the Certified Transportation Instructors Association (CTIA) as part of the DRIVING INSTRUCTORS’ CAREER PATH.
The Ontario Ministry of Transportation recognizes a driving instructor as the only person that is legally permitted to teach driving for compensation in Ontario. (HTA REG. 586)
The career path developed by the CTIA provides a professional guideline for Driving Instructors to plan their future.
Completion of this career path may lead to a college certificate.
